The 19th Annual Genesis Awards

Amidst countless award shows where fashion and celebrities rule the red carpet, The Genesis Awards, presented by The Humane Society, stand out for honoring news and entertainment media that help increase public awareness of animal-protection issues. Award categories range from Outstanding Feature Film and TV Sitcom, to News Feature and Documentary. Universal Picture’s Two Brothers, Zeitgeist Film’s documentary, The Corporation, NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter, World News Tonight With Peter Jennings, Animal Planet’s Animal Cops Houston, The Montel Williams Show and Celebrity Justice were among the 23 honorees recognized for their positive coverage of animal issues. The guest of honor was Ron Kagan, director of the Detroit Zoo, the first facility to stop exhibiting elephants on ethical grounds. Animal-loving celebrities that came to the Beverly Hilton included Alicia Silverstone, Bill Mahr, James Cromwell, Ed Asner, Linda Blair, Wendie Malick, Carl Reiner, Steve Valentine, Lake Bell, Nicollette Sheridan, Stockard Channing, Betty White and Humane Society President Gretchen Wyler. Celebrities posed with Benji on the red carpet. The lovely, consciousness-raising event will be aired as a television special on Animal Planet on Saturday, May 14 at 8:00 P.M.
